Delicious Dahi Bara Aloo Dum: The Perfect Blend of Spices and Creaminess

Dahi Bara Aloo Dum is a popular dish from the state of Odisha in India. It consists of lentil fritters (dahi bara) served with spicy potato curry (aloo dum) and topped with yoghurt, tamarind chutney, and crispy sev. Here's how you can make it at home:

INGREDIENTS:

For Dahi Bara:

  • 1 cup urad dal (white lentils)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

For Aloo Dum:

  • 3 medium-sized potatoes boiled and mashed
  • 2 onions finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for cooking
  • Water as required

For Serving:

  • 1 cup thick yoghurt
  • 1/4 cup tamarind chutney
  • Crispy sev
  • Chopped coriander leaves

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Soak the urad dal in water for at least 4 hours. Drain the water and grind the dal with cumin seeds, ginger paste, and salt to a smooth paste.
  2. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Wet your hands and take small portions of the batter and drop it in the hot oil. Fry the fritters till they turn golden brown.
  3. In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds. Add chopped onions and fry till they turn translucent. Add ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, green chillies, coriander powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Add boiled and mashed potatoes and mix well. Add water as required to make a thick gravy. Cook for 5-7 minutes.
  6. To serve, place 2-3 dahi baras in a bowl. Pour some aloo dum gravy over it. Add a dollop of yoghurt and tamarind chutney. Sprinkle some crispy sev and chopped coriander leaves on top. Enjoy!
